The Master of Design Research is a time-based Higher Degree Research program requiring a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years of full-time study or part-time equivalent.

To be eligible for the award of Master of Design Research (MDesRes), a student must:

  • gain 20 credit points for the prescribed course 8906QCA and
  • successfully complete a supervised research project to be submitted in the following format:
    • a written document (thesis) no longer than 40,000 words or a combined designed outcome and thesis no longer than 20,000 words;
    • document the designed outcome and submit it as an appropriate form of publication (video, film, CD, USB, internet site, site specific installation, exhibition, world wide web publications etc);
    • the thesis (or combined design outcome and thesis) will be examined at the end of the program.

Progress review requirements

Completion of progress reporting requirements is a condition of continued candidature for higher degree research programs. The following progress review requirements must be completed for the Master of Design Research program:

  • completion of the Early Candidature Milestone within 3 months (equivalent full-time) of commencement.
  • completion of the Confirmation of Candidature Milestone within 6 months (equivalent full-time) of commencement.
  • completion of the Thesis and Candidature Review Milestone within 1.5 years (equivalent full-time) of commencement.

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is the national policy for regulated qualifications in Australian education and training. This qualification is accredited as an AQF Level 9 - Masters Degree (Research).
