Why choose this program?

You will study a wide ranging and diverse base of specialist health management courses. If you are a graduate or manager in health and aged care services and you want to develop your skills and understanding of contemporary health service management issues, these degrees will help you achieve your goals. Through flexible teaching and research options, you will learn about key areas of health sector policy, governance, operations and evidence-based practice management.

You will develop skills and knowledge in current management theory and practice, develop your leadership skills and style and gain an in-depth understanding of health workforce planning. You will also learn about managing human resources, planning and implementing health programs, and managing performance and health budgets from respected industry practitioners and academics. Additionally, you will develop skills in strategic decision making and change management and an understanding of the role of technology in health management.

Through a project directly relevant to your organisation's strategic direction, you will develop research and project management skills.

Attendance information

The Master of Health Services Management is offered full time and part-time fully-online and at our South Bank campus.

You will be classed as a part-time student if you are enrolled in less than 30 credit points per trimester. As a part-time student, you will generally attend 6 hours of scheduled classes per week.

As a full-time student, you will generally attend 12 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the trimester.

Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week to accommodate part-time and working students unavailable to attend classes during the day.

The Master of Health Services Management is offered fully online. You can access course materials, participate in learning activities, lodge assessment items and access support services via the University's teach platform Learning@Griffith. There is no requirement for on-campus attendance and access to a reliable computer with internet connection is essential. Internet-fully on-line, if it suits you, some courses may be taken at the South Bank campus.

Student Income Support

To be classed as a full-time student, you are required to enrol in a minimum number of credit points each standard study period. The minimum credit points for full-time enrolment in this program is 30 credit points.

Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are deemed standard study periods. As Trimester 3 is a non-standard study period, continuing students moving from one year to the next will not be required to study during this trimester to be eligible for student income support.

Domestic students who commence in Trimester 3 may be eligible for student income support from the onset of study provided they are enrolled full-time in this study period.

Work-integrated learning

The program provides the opportunity to undertake Work Integrated Learning (WIL) through full-time workplace placement in a healthcare organisation. The aim of WIL is to provide students with the opportunity to translate the content of the postgraduate program to the context of the workplace. This translation will occur with support from an academic supervisor and a workplace supervisor. The WIL component should be seen as key to competency development as well as a translational learning opportunity. This experience will allow the student to develop the necessary attributes, skills and competencies expected in a health service management postgraduate professional. This WIL component offers a unique and exciting opportunity for students to work in contemporary healthcare facilities with health leaders and managers.

Work-integrated learning (professional placement) requires attendance in approved workplaces in Australia or internationally on a full-time basis during the WIL course.

Work-integrated learning activities integrate theoretical learning with its application in the workplace. The inclusion of work-integrated learning activities in the degree program demonstrates Griffith's commitment to preparing its graduates for success in their working life.

The work-integrated learning component of the program is designed as an opportunity to integrate the theoretical knowledge learned over the first two or three trimesters of the program. Accordingly, students may only undertake their industry placement after successful completion of the course work component of their degree program.

Students should be aware that the work-integrated learning component is undertaken across 14 weeks and is only available to students who have completed 80 credit points of courses. Students need to complete important Fit for Placement compliance requirements in the trimester prior to undertaking WIL. Students will need to be enrolled in all four parts of the work-integrated learning course prior to undertaking the 14 week work-integrated placement.
