This Honours program consists of research training and completion of a research project in the School of Natural Sciences. The degree will be assessed by coursework, research project performance, thesis and seminar.
The Bachelor of Biomolecular Science with Honours Program is offered full-time and part-time on-campus at the Nathan campus (Cell & Molecular Therapies and Medicinal Chemistry specialisations) and at the Gold Coast campus (Drug Discovery specialisation). You may choose to study courses at other campuses if or where the program structure allows. Project work will commence on the first Monday in February.
In the Bachelor of Biomolecular Science with Honours Program, you must normally maintain a full-time study load. If you have reasons why you cannot maintain enrolment in 40 credit points per trimester, you must seek approval from the Program Director to take a reduced study load.
Students enrolling in the Bachelor of Biomolecular Science with Honours Program are required to complete coursework and a dissertation.
Coursework: You are required to attend approximately 2-6 hours of scheduled classes per week per 10 credit point course. Classes may be held during the day and evening.
Dissertation: During your enrolment in the dissertation component of this program, it is expected that you will be able to work independently for most of the time. The requirement for on-campus attendance is relatively flexible and unstructured. However, you will be required to meet regularly with your supervisor and it is recommended that you discuss the on-campus attendance requirements with your supervisor at the start of the dissertation.
Intensive study periods: It is compulsory to enrol in some safety courses in the intensive mode. Intensive courses are delivered in short blocks of five days, usually from 9am to 5pm on weekdays during Orientation week. It is expected that if you enrol in the program you will be available to attend.
From 2017, to be classed as a full-time student, you are required to enrol in a minimum number of credit points each standard study period. The minimum credit points for full-time enrolment in this program is 30 credit points.
Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are deemed standard study periods. As Trimester 3 is a non-standard study period, continuing students moving from one year to the next will not be required to study during this trimester to be eligible for student income support.
Domestic students who commence in Trimester 3 may be eligible for student income support from the onset of study provided they are enrolled full-time in this study period.

Work-integrated learning activities integrate theoretical learning with its application in the workplace. Whilst there are no formal work placements, the research project component will equip students with real laboratory skills and experience as carried out in research laboratories everywhere. Depending on availability, area, timing and supervisor, some Honours Projects may involve some work in outside companies or institutions.
It is expected that graduates of the program will be able to plan and conduct quality research and contribute as part of a team to the research culture of their speciality.
The Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) and AusBiotech recognise graduates of this award.

Eligible undergraduate fee-paying students may defer their tuition fees by taking out a FEE-HELP loan which is part of the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). Payment of the loan is via the taxation system when income reaches a specified level.
