Why choose this program?

The overall aim of the program is to train students in the conduct of research within the discipline of biomedical science. Students will undertake a research project under supervision of academic staff and will receive training in scientific writing and research methodologies applicable to biomedical science.

If you are an International student on a student visa, you must ensure that you enrol in a way that will allow you to complete your enrolment within the expected program duration as stated on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) program is offered full-time on-campus at the Nathan campus. Project work will commence on the first Monday in February for Trimester 1 entry and the first Monday of Trimester 2 for Trimester 2 entry.

In the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) Program, you must normally maintain a full-time study load. If you have reasons why you cannot maintain enrolment in 40 credit points per trimester, you must seek approval from the Program Director to take a reduced study load.

Students enrolling in the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) Program are required to complete coursework and a dissertation.

Coursework: You are required to attend approximately 2-6 hours of scheduled classes per week per 10 credit point course. Classes may be held during the day and evening.

Dissertation: During your enrolment in the dissertation component of this program, it is expected that you will be able to work independently for most of the time. The requirement for on-campus attendance is relatively flexible and unstructured. However, you will be required to meet regularly with your supervisor and it is recommended that you discuss the on-campus attendance requirements with your supervisor at the start of the dissertation.

Intensive study periods: It is compulsory to enrol in some safety courses in intensive mode. Intensive courses are delivered in short blocks of five days, usually from 9am to 5pm on weekdays during Orientation week. It is expected that if you enrol in the program you will be available to attend.

Work-integrated learning

Work-integrated learning activities integrate theoretical learning with its application in the workplace. Whilst there are no formal work placements, the research project component will equip students with real laboratory skills and experience as carried out in research laboratories everywhere. Depending on availability, area, timing and supervisor, some Honours Projects may involve some work in outside companies or institutions.

Changing programs

If an International student changes to a different program they will be subject to the approved program fee for the trimester in which they are enrolled.

Permanent resident status

If an undergraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will be provided with a domestic fee-paying place.

The student may then apply for a Commonwealth supported place at the next admission period provided that the student satisfies the conditions for transfer from a domestic fee-paying place to a Commonwealth supported place as set out in the Undergraduate Programs Admission Policy.

If a postgraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth supported place subject to availability.

If a research student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.
