You will be introduced to medical research under the guidance of an academic staff mentor. This degree provides a pathway to PhD studies.
In your first year, you will be introduced to the basic sciences underpinning biomedical science. In your second and third years, you will explore more advanced aspects of the biomedical and clinical sciences.
Honours is included in this degree. You will complete a research project under the supervision of an experienced biomedical researcher.
This program is offered full-time and on-campus at the Gold Coast. It is completed in eight consecutive trimesters.
From 2017, to be classed as a full-time student, you are required to enrol in a minimum number of credit points each standard study period. The minimum credit points for full-time enrolment in this program is 30 credit points.
Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 are deemed standard study periods. As Trimester 3 is a non-standard study period, continuing students moving from one year to the next will not be required to study during this trimester to be eligible for student income support.
Domestic students who commence in Trimester 3 may be eligible for student income support from the onset of study provided they are enrolled full-time in this study period.

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science shares a common foundation first year with a number of other Health Group programs. Core courses in this program involve approximately 230 hours of laboratory work (WIL). Laboratory work and research projects will provide you with a significant period of time in a professional workspace to develop technical knowledge and skills appropriate for work in research or commercial laboratories.
You will participate in the Health Foundation Year courses which include over 80 hours of laboratory work and computer laboratory work in seven of the eight core courses. The second year of the program includes over 120 hours of WIL in laboratory environments. In third year, you will complete a further 30 hours WIL and may elect to complete a further 20 credit points in courses with further WIL in laboratory/professional environs (typically 12 hours per 10 credit points course).
You will be prepared for work in hospitals, health departments, biomedical research institutes, university and government research organisations, and in the pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology and other health-related industries. You will also be well placed to undertake a PhD to pursue a career as a research scientist or for entry to graduate medicine.

Eligible undergraduate fee-paying students may defer their tuition fees by taking out a FEE-HELP loan which is part of the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). Payment of the loan is via the taxation system when income reaches a specified level.
