How to apply

Admission requirements

Admission to the Bachelor of Medical Science will be determined by the following criteria:

  • academic achievement for Year 12 applicants in the year before entry
  • OR academic achievement for applicants who have completed their senior secondary studies up to three years prior to application and who have not previously attempted tertiary study at Diploma level or higher
  • all prerequisite subjects (or their equivalent) must be met.

QTAC application information from 2021
Prerequisites: English, English as an Additional Language, Literature or English & Literature Extension (Units 3&4,C). For applicants who completed secondary studies up to three years before applying and have not attempted tertiary study at diploma level or higher.
Assumed Knowledge: Mathematical Methods (Units 3&4, C); One of Biology, Chemistry or Physics (Units 3&4, C).

Griffith University Rural Priority Access Scheme

A proportion of the Griffith University medical science intake will be required to be from a rural background RA2-5. Therefore, applicants who meet these criteria will be given priority access to Griffith University Bachelor of Medical Science programs.

Language requirements

English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to these programs are described below.

OP 1 to 6 Guarantee

This program is excluded from the OP 1 to 6 Guarantee.

Selection for admission to an undergraduate degree is made on the basis of academic merit.

Selection for admission is competitive as the number of applicants generally exceeds the places available. The minimum requirement for eligibility for admission is completion of Year 12 of secondary school or equivalent academic achievement.

Prerequisites for admission may be specified in terms of levels of achievement in particular Year 12 subjects. Prerequisite conditions may be satisfied by other study or experience which is considered to be equivalent to the Year 12 prerequisites. Domestic applicants should apply for admission through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC).

Domestic applicants from NSW and ACT should apply for admission through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

Note: You will be required to nominate in your QTAC application if you wish to be considered under the Griffith University Rural Priority Access Scheme.


Extra information

Internal Transfer: Griffith students may not apply for the Bachelor of Medical Science by submitting an internal transfer. Students who have been offered a place at University but have deferred and who have not attempted university study may apply through Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) or Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Deferred students may not apply by submitting an internal transfer.

Deferral: Students are permitted to defer an offer in the Bachelor of Medical Science program for one year.

Dress Code: Students should be aware that they are required to dress in attire appropriate to their position as a potential medical student representing Griffith University. The standard of dress should be appropriate to the activities to be undertaken and consistent with expectations as relevant to occupational health and safety requirements, local community standards and cultural mores.

Other Requirements: Bachelor of Medical Science students need to be aware that should they be successful in gaining entry into the Doctor of Medicine (5099), additional requirements must be met prior to commencement. Language requirements

English language requirements apply to applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this program are as follows:

  • A minimum overall band score of 7.0 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 6.5
  • OR a minimum score of 580 on TOEFL
  • OR an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 92 (no score less than 22)
  • OR no score less than 4 in each skill of the ISLPR (conducted by ISLPR Language Services only)
  • OR a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
  • OR an overall score of 65 in the Pearson Test of English (Academic) with no score less than 58.

English test results must be no more than two years old.

The Direct Entry Program (DEP) pathway is not accepted for this program.
