In Year 4, MD students enrol twice a year in a single course, Medicine 4, which consists of four themes: The Doctor and Patient; The Doctor and Knowledge of Health and Illness; The Doctor and Law, Ethics and Professional Practice; and The Doctor and Health in the Community. The students rotate through five 7 week placements over the year. The students attend their core rotations of Critical Care/Orthopaedics and Emergency Medicine in a designated hospital, and General Practice in a practice in South East Queensland. Students also complete a Selective placement which is usually locally based chosen from a list organised by the School of Medicine, and an Elective placement which is usually student-organised and may be local, interstate or international. The settings for learning experiences will vary from discipline to discipline but include ward rounds, out-patient clinics, general practice surgeries, emergency departments, procedural and specialist clinics, theatre sessions, multidisciplinary team meetings, liaison rounds, community clinics (both medical and non-medical) and on-call with junior medical staff. There is an emphasis on learning in clinical and small group environments. A variety of delivery methods are used in relation to educational resources, including seminars, Case Based Learning (CBL) tutorials with an online presentation system (OSCARS), an online system of lectures covering the common conditions, called CLICKS and relevant journal articles/guidelines linked to learning items on Learning@Griffith. There will be workplace based assessments in each block, theme based assignments through the year, a written examination mid year and an OCSE and written examinations end of year.
