Medicine 1 (8001MED_Y1)

In year 1, MD students enrol in a single course, 8001MED, which consists of four integrated themes (a) The Doctor and Knowledge of Health & Illness (DKHI), (b)The Doctor and Patient (D&P), (c)The Doctor and Health in The Community (DHC) and (d) The Doctor, Law, Ethics and Professional Practice (DLEPP). The course involves problem-based learning through facilitated, small group tutorials, supported by lectures, practical classes, workshops, placements in community organisations and other formats, including on-line activities. This course is focused on the structure, function and development of the human body at all levels and the changes that occur as a result of development, growth, disease, injury and abnormal development. Students develop skills in identification, appraisal and interpretation of relevant biomedical information required for understanding and management of common medical and health problems. Students also examine the importance of psychosocial, family, environmental and cultural factors in health and illness from an individual, community and population perspective. This course also prepares medical graduates to provide culturally safe health services to Australia's First Peoples through the enhancement of five interconnected capabilities of respect, communication, safety and quality, reflection and advocacy. (Department of Health 2014). Over the first two years of the MD clinical skills are developed through participation in the programmed skills centre, general practice and hospital-based sessions. These cover communication and examination skills, introductory clinical procedures and history taking.
