This course provides an introduction to contemporary social issues and phenomena that affect language learners. Topics include language contact and change, language variation, gender, identity and culture, migration and citizenship, and the role of language in contributing to inequality. Students also learn about applications of sociolinguistics in the fields of education, language policy and planning and become familiar with current debates in the fields of language testing, language endangerment and linguistic human rights.
