Epidemiology: Principles and Practices (7312MED)

Epidemiology is the study of understanding how and why diseases occur in different groups of people. The information collected in epidemiological study is used to plan and evaluate strategies to prevent illness and as a guide to manage the risk factors of ill health. This course will demonstrate the importance of epidemiology to both health research and the practice of public health and clinical science. Students will be introduced to the principles and methods of epidemiology and shown how to use these in practice. The collection and interpretation of epidemiological data, issues and major public health importance both within Australia and overseas will be addressed. The topics and concepts discussed in the course will be reinforced by practical examples and critical evaluation of health related literature. The skills gained in this course will strengthen student competence in health research and problems solving in professional practice.
