Advanced materials in the context of biomedical applications are synthetic or natural materials that are used to directly replace, change or improve the living tissues (e.g. as implants or prostheses) which have been damaged by diseases, trauma, accidents, etc. These materials can be single or in combination with other materials which are used in contact with living tissues.
