Discrete Time Signal Processing (6321ENG)

This course covers the theory and algorithms of statistical signal processing, estimation and modelling together with their applications in the electrical and electronic engineering disciplines as well as data science and machine learning. The first half of the course covers the mathematical preliminaries in deterministic signal processing, such as the z-transform, discrete-time Fourier transform, FIR and IIR filters, etc. The second half covers the core of the course, which examines the modelling and estimation of random signals and processes using spectral estimation, optimal filtering, and linear estimation (MMSE and least-squares). Students will also learn about artificial neural networks (ANN) as well as the mathematical basis of the backpropagation algorithm that is used in ANN training. Emphasis is placed on engineering applications, such as signal enhancement, signal detection in noise, adaptive noise cancellation, time-series prediction and machine learning.
