Gender and the Law (5218LAW)

This course will interrogate meanings of gender and the law's interplay with gender. Students will study theoretical concepts of gender, feminism, masculinities and aspects of queer theory. They will consider how the law is gendered and how gender influences law, using examples around women's issues, masculinities and transgender issues. As examples of the law's interaction with gender, the course will include aspects of health law, family law, criminal law and legal approaches to assignment of gender. Prerequisites: 7731LAW Foundations of Law OR 1031LAW Foundations of Law OR 1011LAW Law and the Modern State; 7728LAW Global Law OR 1028LAW Global Law OR 1012LAW Introduction to Legal Theory.
