Food Law and Policy (5182LAW)

The course focuses upon the laws at all levels of government and the policies that govern the structure and content of the Australian food regulatory system. Students will explore the interplay between local, state, and federal food policy and laws/regulations and their impact on various sectors including health, environment and equity through discussion on a range of food issues at national and global levels, case law, international food standards/agreements and statutory interpretation. The major topics include the history of food laws and regulations in Australia, policy considerations and food law regulatory governance, the legal and institutional framework at federal and state (Qld) levels, food safety, food labelling, the implementation and enforcement of food laws/regulation, food justice, food ethics and international food standards and the role of global institutions in food governance.
