Principles of Intellectual Property Law (5023LAW)

Intellectual property law, which is the generic term for various areas of law which protect creativity, is increasing in importance. The main areas likely to be covered in the course include copyright, patents, design, trade marks and plant variety protection. The syllabus will be based on Australian law as well as relevant international developments (such as GATT/TRIPS) and the laws of the European Union. Intellectual property applies to a wide range of activities from property rights in DNA and genetically modified animals through to protection of artistic works and digital sampling. Given the breadth of the subject matter with which intellectual property law concerns itself, the course lends itself to integration with all relevant disciplines. No prior technical knowledge is required. Prerequisites: 7714LAW Property 1 OR 3014LAW Property 1 OR 3011LAW Property Law 1; 7715LAW Property 2 OR 3015LAW Property 2 OR 3012LAW Property Law 2; 7724LAW Equity and Trusts OR 4024LAW Equity and Trusts OR 2010LAW Equity AND 2011LAW Trusts.
