Islam and Muslim Communities in the West (3612LHS)

Relations between the Islamic world and the West have seen periods of both conflict and cooperation, mutual vilification and interdependence. Since the turn of the century, Islam-West relations have become increasingly important in the context of international relations, trade, and global peace and security. This course examines both historical and contemporary relations between Muslim majority countries and those categorised as part of the West. It considers a range of issues in Islam-West relations including foreign policies, war and conflict. In addition to the international perspective, this course also focuses on Muslim communities in the West and the challenges associated with migration, settlement, community-building and integration. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to potential roles in governments, NGOs and other organisations concerning Islamic and Muslim issues.
