Action research is a way of gaining knowledge through exploration and reflection, by combining theory with practice [praxis]. The process is fundamental to art and design. You select a topic, analyze it in detail, and discover new ways of understanding it. The insights gained are used to reconsider and reformulate your original concept. The process is repeated, forming a continuous feedback loop that gives you an increasingly deeper understanding of the subject matter and increases the likelihood of discovering new, creative possibilities. You are asked to reflect upon the process, and identify how your work relates to the theory and practice of others within your discipline. With regard to graphic design in particular, design practice and the global framework within which it exists is critically analysed, with reference to movements such as metadesign and design futures.
