Migration, Settlement and Integration (3550LHS)

The contemporary era is one of unprecedented population mobility, as people seek new opportunities and safety from harm. As a result, societies are more culturally diverse and globally connected than ever before. This course explores patterns in world migration to understand how people experience belonging and integration in local spaces. It discusses how migration is influenced by international organisations, and engages with key case studies from recent history. The course then analyses the central aspects of settlement to understand the components of secure, culturally diverse societies. It concludes by examining the impact of ethnicity, religion, age, and sex on people's experience of belonging.
