Social Media for Journalism and Public Relations (3521LHS)

Social media literacy has become essential to the work of professional communicators, particularly those working in journalism and public relations. This course covers the theory and practice of social media usage in the news and public relations contexts. It positions social media as a communication platform before considering the uses of social media in reporting, source identification, verification, attribution, issues management, audience building and public relations campaigning. Students learn the practices of ethical social media use and, via a series of case studies, learn the potential legal and ethical hazards in the misuse of social media. Students learn to distinguish between personal and professional social media use and to work within their organisations' social media policies when engaging in social media.
