Materials and Manufacturing (3508ENG)

The Course introduces students to advanced materials and their applications with the aim to deepen their understanding about i) how materials properties guide materials selection at the product design stage, ii) how core materials properties (either surface- or bulk properties) are changed, adapted or mended to specific user environment and/or an application field through a variety of manufacturing methods, and iii) how commercial material objects (or products) are manufactured in a factory setting. The Course will endue students with relevant knowledge on current materials surface technology, material treatment processes and manufacturing and production system processes, process technology and manufacturing systems design. Additive and rapid prototyping technology and lean engineering/lean production will be also be discussed in this Course. The Course is designed for 3rd year engineering students that already possess university-level fundamental knowledge on properties of common engineering materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics and attained theoretical and practical knowledge on fabrication and processing methods for these materials. The Course is developed to provide a practical, project-based immersion into materials selection process (with real, commercial products used as study samples) where students will learn how initial material selection process effects the geometry, structure, performance and cost of a final product. Assessment is by group assignment, oral presentation and individual examination.
