Power, Politics and Trouble in Paradise: South Pacific Study Tour (3381LHS)

This course is designed to equip students with a basic understanding of complex historical, racial, geostrategic and economic dimensions of France's ambiguous role as a South Pacific power. This course involves two weeks' travel to two French-administered territories in the Pacific, New Caledonia and French Polynesia. Given the growing global strategic importance of this region to Australia, and its proximity to Southeast Queensland as Australia's main Pacific gateway, this study tour is a timely addition to Griffith University's comprehensive suite of study tours. This course will familiarise Australian students with the emergence of France as a Pacific power, its troubled history, problematic present, and uncertain future. It is suitable for any undergraduate student enrolled within AEL or GBS.
