Environmental and Social Futures (3307ENV)

This course explores key contexts for transitioning to future sustainable societies. It is based upon the important link between environmental and social futures in the context of both high and low income nations, and considers the key role of indigenous peoples. Creating communities that are sustainable, and produce high levels of wellbeing, are a major objective of almost all societies and there is growing demand for skilled practitioners who can contribute to this transformation. The primary topics for the course are team-taught across three modules. These modules share many essential concepts and themes but are centred around three core areas (1) environmental values (e.g., anthropocentric, eco-centric, religious, and other cultural values) and behavioural change; (2) wellbeing, ethics, and creating sustainable economies; and (3) indigeneity and the legacy of colonialism, theories of development, and gender and environmental ethics. Assessment include mini-essays, a reflective journal, on-line quizzes, and a final exam. Prior assumed background knowledge of social, economic, and environmental concepts related to sustainability would be an advantage. Readings and materials beyond lecture sources will be provided to help students in their understanding of the course content, development of skills, and for assessment. Prerequisite: Completion of 80CP. Incompatible: 3041ENV.
