World Cinema (3301LHS)

This course provides an historical and thematic survey of key and representative films of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East with a particular focus on exploring developments in international film cultures since World War II. Using genres that have circulated internationally since the 1950s as lens and touchstone (the warrior film, the wedding film, horror and road film), it provides a critical understanding of both the currency and conceptual complexity of the terms 'world', 'transnational', and 'global' when applied to cinema, particularly in relation to and distinction from 'national' cinemas. In relation to these ideas, it considers the growth and ongoing importance of international film festivals and the development of international distribution networks as well as the increasing significance of media convergence.
