Discourse, Text and Power (3203LHS)

Discourse, which means 'language-in-use', influences every aspect of our lives, from the personal to the social, public and global. Some discourses lie above our level of consciousness (overt) and others below it (covert), but they all affect our everyday existence and define our culture. At a personal level, you engage in interplays of discourse, text and power every time you argue with a family member. At the global level, graver discourse battles can be observed on news screens and You Tube as warring parties seek to advance their ideologies. This course explores the question 'How is language used to exercise power?' As such, a strong focus is on the nexus of language and socio-political issues. We look at the discursive strategies employed by politicians, the media, organisations, educators, advertisers, spin doctors, extremists, authorities of all kinds and more. You will gain the tools of critical discourse analysis and learn how to produce discourse in highly effective ways. No prior knowledge is assumed.
