Digital Earth (3118ENG)

This course takes students on a journey into the world of data acquisition, preparation, consumption, storage and disposal. Students will gain an appreciation of the value of knowing when data should be prepared for long term use, versus when data should be gathered and consumed. We will uncover and discuss hidden costs of data mismanagement, spanning wastage in energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, storage infrastructure and human resources. Students will explore opportunities for whole-of-life energy costing of data decisions, applying concepts such as 'lean thinking' to encourage stewardship with data handling. This course will be run in collaboration with Chubu University (Japan). Students will be given the opportunity to consider research projects that could lead to a final year Industrial Affiliates Program project. The course will be offered for the first time in T2, 2019.
