Geotechnical Engineering Practice (3115ENG)

This course provides students with valuable opportunities to learn how to apply relevant theories from Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering into practice so that they can effectively conduct field surveys and laboratory examination of soil samples, correctly interpret and analyse results of such geotechnical investigations, select appropriate parameters for numerical models, evaluate stability of natural slopes and embankments, and develop skills to write comprehensive and concise geotechnical reports. In addition, the fundamentals of geology and rock mechanics will be introduced and discussed through a number of case studies. Students will also have the opportunity to become familiar with leading computer programs, which are commonly used in the industry, and through performing project-based assignments students will acquire sufficient knowledge and develop critical computer skills that will enable them to solve various practical problems.
