Rock Mechanics (3114ENG)

Rock mechanics is an important branch of Civil and Mining Engineering that deals with the engineering behavior of rock material. Students wishing to become successful engineers will need to have a thorough understanding of fundamental principles of rock mechanics and develop skills that will allow them to apply such knowledge to solve real-life problems. In this course students will have opportunities to learn about the origin of rocks and the role of geology in the formation of geotechnical properties of rocks. Students will also learn how to apply relevant theories into practice so that they can effectively conduct field surveys and laboratory examination of rock samples, correctly interpret and analyse results of such investigations, select appropriate parameters for numerical models, evaluate stability of rock slopes, and develop skills to write comprehensive and concise reports. Students will be provided with the opportunity to become familiar with leading computer programs, which are commonly used in the industry, and through performing project-based assignments students will acquire sufficient knowledge and develop critical computer skills that will enable them to solve various practical problems.
