NMR and Structural Chemistry (3103NSC)

NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-Ray Diffraction are two of the most important diagnostic tools for structural elucidation in the chemical and biological sciences. Considerable advances have been made in both techniques over the last three decades and they are now indispensable tools for chemistry, biochemistry and many areas of biology and medicine. Whilst this course highlights the applications of both of the techniques, most of the emphasis is on current applications of NMR. Specifically, we wish to develop an understanding of the type of problems that can be addressed using NMR spectroscopy and how the technique would be applied to those problems. Following the NMR content, the course provides an overview of the basic concepts of molecular symmetry and introduces the student to the technique of single crystal X-ray diffraction in a non-mathematical context. Pre-requisites: 2102BPS Spectroscopic & Molecular Analysis OR 2102NSC Spectroscopic & Molecular Analysis Incompatible: 3137SCE Applications of NMR.
