Popular Music, Culture and Identity (3056LHS)

Spanning a range of pop and rock eras, including 'beat', psychedelic, glam, punk, reggae, rap, dance and metal, a key aim of the course is to look at how popular music influences notions of identity, politics, taste and belonging in contemporary culture. Additionally, given the increasingly historical nature of many aspects of pop and rock, perspectives from work on ageing, memory and cultural heritage will also be drawn on in the course. A range of artifacts will be considered including songs / albums, film and documentary, fashion and style as well as the increasing importance of social media as a means of accessing and connecting with popular music.
