Private Lives and Public Troubles (3055LHS)

This course will investigate shifting notions of public and private in contemporary life. Through a range of topics, it will explore the intersections between private lives and public troubles and how media, including social media, both exposes and undoes some sense of a visible or secure boundary between the private and public lives of individuals and groups. The course will engage with a range of theoretical and popular discussion about concepts of public and private, the intersections of these with changing notions of 'community' and 'society', and how these being deployed in contemporary life. This will include consideration of the various ways in which people inhabit and use material and virtual spaces, and the extent to which the sites and spaces we move through impact upon our ways of interacting with each other. The focus will be on key experiences in everyday lives through topics such as friendship and affinity, interest groups, death and grief in the landscape, public mourning and commemoration, social media and the politics and practices of grieving publically and online, the domestication of technology and connectivity as a mode of being and how these are reshaping the ways in which we live, interact and form relationships.
