Research in Sociology (3035LHS)

This is a capstone third year course for within the Sociology major and provides hands on experience of social research, in-depth interviews. Students nominate a research topic and, with the assistance of the teaching team, draft a research plan to investigate that topic. Students then undertake 3 in-depth interviews and qualitative data analysis following templates and protocols provided by the research team. As background, the course surveys literature on research methods with particular attention to in-depth interviewing. The course aims to assist potential honours students formulate research projects for their honours year. It may also provide opportunities to undertake projects with community or 'industry' partners. Both these outcomes allow you to see the various applications and uses of sociological research methods and knowledge. Assessment involves preparation of a research plan and interview schedules, the conduct and transcription of 3 interviews, a report of findings from the interviews and a reflection on the research process.
