Managing People in the Asia Pacific (3033IBA)

The Asia-Pacific is the largest and most dynamic economic region in the world. Between 1990 and 2014, Asia's share of world GDP alone grew from 23% to almost 40%. The region also borders the worlds' three largest economies, the US, China and Japan, while India's GDP is predicted to surpass that of Japan by 2021. Operating in this competitive environment requires Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) to effectively manage international and locally based managers and workers across differing social, legal, economic and workplace contexts. Students therefore study pertinent and interrelated aspects in relation to managing an international workforce, including international human resource management (IHRM) and comparative employment relations (ER) concepts, issues and practices, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region. This includes examining national institutions, ER legislation, socio-political settings, culture and levels of economic development that may further impact on regional labour markets and work practices. The course further addresses MNE strategies and investment decisions, such as offshore outsourcing and the relocation of production processes, that raise potential ethical issues. Students then apply theory to practice by analysing case studies and other material that allow them to apply these concepts to 'real life' scenarios and develop practical recommendations.
