Contemporary Issues in Ageing (3024HSV)

This course is taught in either a blended learning mode (online learning, face-to-face intensive) in Trimester 3 or completely online with no attendance. Attendance on the 5-day intensive is compulsory for the blended learning mode. The Australian population is ageing, with around 3.5 million (15.1%) aged 65 years or plus (ABS, 2015). The ageing population is anticipated to increase to 20% of the total population by 2026 (Commonwealth of Australia, 2015). Whilst 5.2% of older people reside in care accommodation such as nursing homes, 94.8% live in households and actively participate in community life (ABS, 2015). However, our society still has many stereotypes, myths and negative perceptions. It's time for us to challenge the traditional views of ageing as deficits, dependency, fearfulness and burden. Ageing can also be an active and productive process with participation in employment, social interaction, lifelong learning, and community involvement. This course will help students develop a better understanding of the concepts, theories, and key knowledge of ageing from a positive and critical perspective. Students will also learn how to work with older people. Restriction: This course is not available to Master of Social Work students.
