Advanced Anatomy and Physiology (3010MSC)

This course builds on fundamental aspects of human anatomy and physiology, focusing on and developing a detailed understanding of the inter-relationships between physiological function and anatomy (the function-structure nexus) in select organ systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and reproductive systems. Developmental aspects of these organ systems are initially addressed, followed by an examination of integrated responses to physiological or environmental perturbations in the adult, and anatomical/functional features of ageing and important disease states. These fundamental elements are bolstered by investigations of current research in these areas, including analysis/critique of research papers and development and presentation of related research reports. Theoretical elements of the course will be underpinned by practical laboratory experience, particularly the study of cadaveric material. Prerequisite: 2012AHS Integrated Systems Physiology and one of the following: 2008MSC Structural Biochemistry OR 2002AHS Biochemistry of Exercise
