Gender Issues in Islam and Muslim Societies (2614LHS)

This course serves as a comprehensive introduction to gender issues in Islam and Muslim community contexts. Gender in Islam and Muslim communities explores patriarchal and non-patriarchal interpretations of Islam's foundational texts, concepts of masculinity and femininity in the Islamic interpretative tradition; aspects of Muslim family laws (marriage, divorce, inheritance, child custody), domestic and sexual violence, female genital cutting/circumcision, so called honor-based crimes, reproductive health, sexual diversity, Islamic feminism and lived religiosities. The wide range of reading materials are presented in easily accessible digital form.
