Materials and Manufacturing (2506ENG)

This is the 3rd year engineering course that introduces students to advanced materials and their applications, such as complex alloys, coatings, thin-films, paints and adhesives, and provides an introduction to key concepts in product manufacturing by addressing the elements of quality control, non-destructive testing, lean manufacturing and manufacturing system design. The course is developed to provide a practical, project-based immersion into materials selection process illustrated with case studies where students learn how initial material selection determines the shape, function, properties and fabrication approached of real-world engineering products. By taking this course students will learn how to select the most appropriate materials and processes when engineering a product, and to design a competitive manufacturing organisation using lean manufacturing principles to achieve delivery of the product with improved quality, efficiency and productivity. Assessment is by individual and group assignment and through written examination. Please check the "assumed knowledge" for this course under the course profile to ensure you meet the pre-requisites required for enrolment. This course is planned to be offered for the 1st time in 2018, trimester 2 and replaces 3508ENG.
