Thermodynamics (2503ENG)

This course enables development of a deeper level of understanding of the laws that govern the conversion of energy from one form to another. Knowledge of thermodynamics is essential for the engineer to recognize the possibilities and limitations for improvement of energy efficiency in the design of engineering systems. Topics covered include: properties of pure substances, first and second laws of thermodynamics, closed systems, control volumes, entropy, second law analysis of engineering systems, power and refrigeration cycles and internal combustion engines. Assessment is by assignments consisting of problems in engineering thermodynamics, laboratory work, and a final examination.
