Data and Computer Communications (2323ENG)

The course will initially explore topics in relation to generic data communications, including: OSI model; PSTN modem technology ; Error correction ; Data compression ; Physical layer standards; Line codes ; Signals in noise ; Idle RQ and continuous RQ ; Link utilisation ; Link layer protocols ; Data over terrestrial and satellite radio. The second half of the course will look specifically at topics related to the application to computer networks, including: Network topologies; Network bearers and physical attachment ; LANs and WANs; CSMA and token protocols ; Networking protocol performance ; Bridges and routing ; Encryption and compression; Internet protocols ; SSL. A series of laboratories will cover relevant topics, in particular related to signals and performance of data systems.
