Spectroscopic and Molecular Analysis (2102NSC)

Modern scientists employ a range of spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques to probe specific properties of molecules and materials. In this course we mostly consider the interactions of electromagnetic radiation such as light and radio waves with matter and further consider how these interactions can be exploited spectroscopically to provide scientists with interpretable data. Data that can be derived from mass analysis will also be presented. The course is split into three modules: Module one is primarily aimed at deriving the structure of small organic molecules from various spectral information such as NMR, UV, IR and MS, and utilises spectroscopic problem-solving exercises in an open class environment. Module two considers the interactions of light with matter, particularly in a biological context. Module three is a laboratory component, in which students will undertake hands-on training in the use of IR, fluorescence, UV/Vis, and ICP-OES instrumentation. Prerequisites: Nathan Campus Courses: 1021SCG Chemistry 1A AND 1022SCG Chemistry 1B OR 1101BPS Chemistry 1A AND 1104BPS Chemistry 1B. Gold Coast Campus Courses: 1013ENV Chemistry of Biological Systems 1 AND 1015MSC Chemistry in Biological Systems 2 OR 1023SCG Chemistry I AND 1024SCG Chemistry II. Incompatible: 2122SCE Spectroscopic Techniques. Prior assumed knowledge: 2103BPS/2103NSC Organic Chemistry OR 2014MSC Organic Chemistry.
