Global Security (2020GIR)

This course provides an introduction to global security in the modern world, seeking to do so in a way that promotes critical thinking skills and your ability to identify, apply and evaluate contending theoretical perspectives. The first part, over the first two weeks, focuses on how the main paradigms of International Relations conceptualize security across shifting contexts. This includes realist, liberal, constructivist, historical institutionalist and social psychological approaches. The second part, over the middle weeks of the course, provides historical insight into the sources of global security and insecurity, tracing shifts in understandings of sovereignty, the global balance of power, economic power and crises, and the scope for pragmatic or populist leadership. The third and final part, which runs for the remainder of the trimester, situates these historical trends in recent settings, highlighting shifting views of sovereignty and human security in debates over the responsibility to protect (R2P), shifting constructions of the War on Terror, the Global Financial Crisis, and the ascendant populism of recent years, from Brexit to Trump. In addition, current issues in global security may be interwoven with the weekly material.
