Political Leadership (2013GIR)

Leaders and leadership are deeply ambiguous in politics. Leadership can seem both essential to politics (the media focus on it almost exclusively, and without it nothing seems to get done) and deeply anti-political as indicated by calls to 'playing politics'. Our political woes are usually attributed to bad leaders; there is nothing, it seems, that cannot be solved by the actions or example of a strong and decisive leader. And yet leaders in office argue that their hands are tied by commitments, national interest, popular will, markets, justice, procedures, and so on. So do we mis-identify the source of political problems when we focus on leaders? What power do they wield? What is leadership, let alone what makes it good or bad? This course will explore these and other questions in theory and practice, beginning with a recent revolution in the way we theorise leadership, then examining leadership in a number of diverse contexts.
