Crime and Media (2013CCJ)

The mass media are the main sources of information for most people about crime and the criminal justice system. Critics claim that the media present distorted messages about crime, but perhaps the more interesting question is how audiences construct aspects of their own identities based on media representations of crime and criminality. The course explores theories of media and crime, core concepts such as moral panic and fear of crime, crime as entertainment, newsworthy crime, the nature and functions of the new media, and implications for the development of media criminology
