Languages of East and Southeast Asia (2007LHS)

The languages of East and Southeast Asia are linguistically fascinating, as well holding great practical and cultural importance to the global environment of the 21st century. This course overviews the diversity of languages in Southeast Asia and East Asia, and in the process explains the differences from familiar European languages. The course introduces appropriate linguistic techniques and concepts for analysing the linguistic features, such as lexical tone, classifiers, elaborate expressions, serial verb constructions, honorifics, and non-alphabetic scripts. The main emphasis is on national languages, such as Indonesian, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese,Tagalog (Filipino), and Korean. Minority languages from the six main language families of the region are also surveyed. Some attention is given to sociocultural and pragmatic topics, such as word skills, forms of address, and speech styles.
